Behind The Song

 Faith In God Above

The first song to be recorded and released as SARAHS_HUSBAND was originally written way back in March 1993. It has been a song that has been in my song repertoire since then.

It is basically a song to challenge the listener, to have faith in God even when things aren't going the way you thought they would or should. And I still stand behind the words today and I'm glad to say that I still have the same faith that I did back then.

When it was first written, the song had a different chorus melody which I wasn't happy with (I still have the original cassette demo of it - not worth letting anyone hear that, lol). But a friend, Philip Annett, took it and fixed it and so it remains.

The lyrics had been as they were up until the point I decided to record my songs and release them a few years ago. And if you look at my original notebook from back then you can see that the changes are very small.

Stylistically, the song changed when I added a more prominent bass line and it's been my preferred arrangement. And after listening to some early band recordings, I think it's better as it is now.

I'm not sure why I chose this one as my first release, but I'm glad I did.

Just Like Me

This song is completely different in style and is more autobiographical in nature.

It was written back in July 1993 and talks about that feeling you have when you first ask Jesus to forgive you for your sin and to be your Saviour. The young boy is of course me, I became a Christian when I was 9 years old.

The 2nd and 3rd verses are a summary of life and how some Christians can wander from the path and do things that aren't pleasing to God but ending with the positive note of how God is there all the way through it all.

The chorus starts with me and ends with God, as I believe all things will. Human nature tends to think that the world revolves around us where as God shows us through His Word that it really doesn't.

Again, this song has remained fairly close to what was written all those years ago. Just a few little things have been changed or removed. (I've added a photo from my old songbook to show you.)

I feel now that it is how it was meant to be and I'm more than happy that it's out there for whomever wants to hear it.

Horseman Of The King

This song is a bit special.

In my archive of cassette recordings from ‘back in the day’, this is the earliest recorded song that I have.

You can see in the above picture from my songbook that it was written on 20th March 1991.

I’ve mentioned before that it’s not my first written song, but it is the earliest song that I have with a lyric and melody that I actually remembered 30 years on. I was pleased when I checked with the recording that my memory was correct 😂.

From what I remember, the song was inspired by the title of Cyril Davey’s biography of John Wesley the founder of the Methodist Church, that I came across in a pile of old books.

I can also see from the original 1991 lyrics that it was the title ‘Horseman of The King’, that was the basis for the song. And I have to confess that the original verse lyrics were completely unrelated to John Wesley’s story. Because of that, I  felt that I had to re-write them and make them relevant before I released it…

And I think I’ve done it justice.

His story is very inspiring and it’s not hard to see the impact he had on those around him. And certainly I recommend you look into his story for yourself.

A 30 year old song, with new additions - I'm very proud of it.
